Variety of Aluminum Various aluminum materials

By far the most commonly used aluminum alloy in additive manufacturing is AlSi10Mg, an age-strengthened aluminum alloy with good hardness, strength and dynamic toughness that has been traditionally used as a casting alloy. Powders made from AlSi10Mg are commonly used in additive manufacturing and the final components have high corrosion resistance, low density and high mechanical strength.

Common aluminum alloy materials

2. Al6061

●Ingredients: Contains silicon and magnesium, with a small amount of copper, manganese and chromium added.

●Performance: 6061 alloy has good mechanical strength, excellent corrosion resistance and good weldability, so it is widely used in many industrial fields. Its strength and durability are ideal for parts that need to withstand larger loads.

3. Al2024

●Composition: With copper as the main alloy element, it has high strength and good fatigue resistance.

●Performance: 2024 alloy has extremely high tensile strength and good fatigue resistance, and is often used in applications requiring high strength and durability. Its disadvantage is that its corrosion resistance is weak and coating protection is often required.

4. Al7075

●Composition: With zinc as the main alloy element, it is suitable for applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance.

●Performance: 7075 alloy is the strongest among aluminum alloys. Its strength is close to that of some steels, but it still maintains lightweight characteristics. It has good corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance and is often used in applications with high loads.

5. Al1050

●Composition: Almost pure aluminum, with excellent electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.

●Performance: 1050 alloy has low strength, but has very good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. Suitable for applications that do not require high strength but require good corrosion resistance and conductivity.

Aluminum 3D printing methods

Selective Laser Melting (SLM): This technology uses a high-power laser to melt and fuse aluminum powder layer by layer.

Electron Beam Melting (EBM): A similar process to SLM, but uses an electron beam to melt metal powder.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM): While aluminum is less common, there are systems that use aluminum wire or composite materials to create parts.

Binder Jetting: This process uses a liquid binder to bind metal powders, which are then sintered to obtain the final metal part.

Each method has its own unique advantages, with SLM and EBM being the most commonly used methods for industrial-grade aluminum 3D printing due to their high precision and ability to handle complex geometries.

Main applications of aluminum 3D printing

The aerospace industry requires lightweight, durable and high-performance components. Aluminum 3D printing enables the manufacture of complex components such as engine parts, brackets and fuselage components.Boeing uses 3D printing to create custom aluminum parts on its planes, satellites and helicopters. 3D printing using aluminum alloys coated with specially selected nanoparticles during the cooling stage allows the creation of high-strength aluminum alloys that can be welded without thermal cracking. This breakthrough technology could lead to lighter airframes and allow aircraft to fly further using less fuel. Airbus is using a modern aluminum alloy developed specifically for additive manufacturing of 3D printed parts in the A350 XWB and other aircraft. It also uses aluminum 3D-printed parts in its communications satellites, which contain more than 500 additively manufactured parts.

In the automotive sector, aluminum 3D printing is used to produce lightweight parts to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Examples include engine parts, exhaust systems and custom parts for high-performance cars. Porsche has provided its flagship GT2 RS with 3D-printed aluminum pistons that add 30 horsepower from the 700-horsepower twin-turbo engine while improving the vehicle's efficiency and performance. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is 3D printing aluminum replacement parts for its range of trucks and cars to ensure greater road safety. 3D aluminum printing is also growing in popularity for aftermarket parts. Automotive restorers around the world are using 3D printed aluminum when OEM parts are unavailable.

Whether you are in the aerospace, automotive, medical device or consumer goods industry, aluminum 3D printing can produce lightweight, complex and high-performance parts that were previously impossible or cost-prohibitive to produce using traditional methods. By choosing professional aluminum 3D printing services, companies can realize the full potential of additive manufacturing and stay ahead of the curve in an increasingly competitive market.
