What is 3D printing resolution?


3D printing resolution refers to the level of detail a 3D printer is able to achieve, and is usually measured in microns (µm). The lower the number, the higher the resolution, and it mainly includes the minimum level of detail that the printer can achieve in the horizontal and vertical directions:


XY resolution (horizontal resolution): This determines the printer's printing accuracy in the X and Y axes (left-right and front-to-back directions).

Z resolution (layer height): This refers to the thickness of each layer of material. The smaller the layer height, the smoother the printed surface and the richer the details.


Resolution directly affects the surface quality and detail of the printed object. Resolution differences between different types of printers


FDM printers: Most FDM printers have a layer height between 50 and 300µm. XY resolution is limited by the nozzle diameter, usually around 400 µm.

Resin printers (SLA/DLP): Resolution is primarily determined by the size of the laser. The laser spot is much smaller than the nozzle of FDM, so SLA can print finer details than FDM. Depending on the laser system used, their layer height can be as low as 25 µm and the XY resolution can be less than 50 µm.

SLS printers use selective laser sintering, and 50µm is generally considered the standard minimum laser height for SLS.
