Overview of Polishing Options

JLC3DP currently offers two polishing levels for metal 3D printed parts:

Standard Polishing – Improves appearance and removes visible burrs

Fine Polishing – Achieves a smoother, near-mirror surface on selected areas

⚠️ Polishing services are currently available primarily for Binder Jetting (BJ) 3D printed parts.

1. Metal 3D Printed Parts — Standard Polishing

1.1 Overview

Standard polishing is performed using industrial-grade automated polishing equipment.

Its primary purpose is to remove visible burrs and enhance surface brightness, improving the overall visual quality of the part.

1.2 Results

After standard polishing, the surface roughness is reduced by more than 50%.

For example, Binder Jetting (BJ) printed parts typically achieve a surface roughness of approximately Ra 0.8–Ra 2.4 after polishing. The surface becomes noticeably brighter, smoother, and more metallic in appearance.

While a slight granular texture may remain, part dimensional accuracy is not compromised.

1.3 Important Notes

After standard polishing, pre-existing surface minor marks and layer lines may become more visible under light compared to before polishing. This is a common accompanying phenomenon when achieving a high-gloss surface finish and does not indicate a defect.

2. Metal 3D Printed Parts — Fine Polishing

2.1 Overview

If standard polishing does not meet the surface quality requirements of your application, JLC3DP offers fine polishing as an advanced finishing option.

Fine polishing is applied to specified areas of the part to achieve a significantly smoother surface finish.

2.2 Results

Fine polishing can achieve an entry-level mirror-like finish.

For BJ-printed parts, surface roughness can be reduced to below Ra 0.5.

The polished surface becomes smooth, glossy, and free of graininess, delivering excellent visual and tactile quality.

2.3 Important Notes

Geometric Requirements

Fine polishing has strict geometric limitations. It is best suited for:

Large flat exterior surfaces,

Cylindrical or round geometries.

Dimensional Impact

Fine polishing may result in approximately 0.3 mm of material removal on polished surfaces.
