How to smooth 3d prints:6 Methods for a Perfect Finish
In the field of 3D printing, the surface quality of the finished product directly affects its appearance and functionality. Although 3D printing technology has made great progress, due to the principle of stacked printing, obvious layer lines often appear on the finished product, which not only affects the visual effect, but may also affect its performance in some applications. Therefore, it is particularly important to smooth the 3D printed parts. Smoothing can not only enhance the appearance of the finished product, making it more professional and beautiful, but also improve the physical properties of its surface to meet higher usage requirements.
JLC3DP provides professional smoothing post-processing services to ensure that your 3D prints achieve the highest quality possible. This article will introduce six common methods for achieving smooth surfaces
1. Sanding
Using sandpaper is the most common way to smooth the surface of 3D printed parts. You can start with 100-200 grit sandpaper to remove larger layer lines, and then gradually move to higher grit sandpaper such as 400-600 to further refine the smoothing effect. Wet sanding can be used as a final sanding stage, which is effective in reducing dust during the sanding process and will leave a polished effect, improving the smoothness of the final surface.

2. Primer and paint
By applying primer to the surface of the 3D print, you can fill in small layer lines and imperfections, and then sand to achieve a smooth surface effect. The dried primer can be sanded, and if necessary, the process can be repeated, and finally a coat of paint is applied to achieve a polished effect. This method is particularly suitable for users who want to achieve a uniform and smooth surface, but this method is more time-consuming because you have to wait for each layer of primer to dry.

3. Heat gun smoothing
For materials such as PLA that are not heat-resistant, using a heat gun is also an effective way to smooth 3D prints. By carefully heating the surface of the print, the outer layer of material will melt slightly, reducing the visibility of layer lines. However, this method requires controlling the temperature to avoid overheating and causing the print to deform.

4. Resin coating
Applying a thin layer of epoxy or UV-curable resin to the surface of the print can make its surface smoother. The coated print can be cured under a UV lamp (for UV resins) or allowed to dry naturally. If desired, you can also sand the cured surface for an ultra-smooth finish.

5. Solvent Immersion
Some specific materials can be smoothed by briefly immersing them in a suitable solvent. Place the 3D print in a sealed container and add a small amount of acetone. The acetone vapor will gradually dissolve the surface layer lines of the print to achieve a smooth finish. For PLA materials, methylene chloride can be used for smoothing, but more caution is required because PLA is more sensitive to chemical reactions. When performing chemical smoothing, always operate in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate protective equipment.

6. Vapor Smoothing
Researchers have found that ethyl acetate can also be used for effective chemical vapor smoothing of PLA. One study showed that using ethyl acetate vapor can "reduce roughness by nearly 90% and offers several advantages in terms of toxicity, solvent volume, and processing time. Use an automated vapor smoothing machine to produce an alcohol mist that removes the top layer of your printed parts.
